Description

This is a complete Buddha statue in a relatively good shape with both the pedestal and the mandorla intact. The eyes, nose, and mouth are small on the square face. The chest is broad and the waist slim. The slightly shrugged shoulders make the statue look unstable. The right hand is damaged but the palm appears to be facing down on the knee and pointing downwards. The left hand is in front of the belly button, with the palm up. There are parallel folds in the robe, which is covering only the left shoulder. The body halo is in the shape of a narrow boat. There are lotus flowers and the scroll pattern on the head and body mandorlas. The edges form the pattern of a burning flame. The pedestal is divided into the top, middle and bottom parts. The top pedestal stone is shaped like a lotus flower supporting the statue. The octagonal middle part is shaped like a column while the bottom part takes the form of an upside down lotus flower. The head, face, body, folds in the robe, pedestal and mandorla are some of the most outstanding characteristics of Buddha statues built in the 9th century that also set the 9th century statues apart from those made in the 8th century.
