Description

Flagpole supports are a pair of stone supports to hold flag poles used for special occasions at a temple. These are 66cm apart from each other. The sculptural details of these structures, such as the rounding of the edges and the vertical linear patterns are the typical design technique used during the Unified Silla period. The square indentions and round holes were to hold levers for locking the banner pole in place. These banner pole supports are believed to have been erected in the latter years of Silla when the Donghwasa Temple was built. Judging from that the whole structure is rather dull and heavy and that the Donghwasa Temple was founded in 832 (7th year of King Heungdeok), this dangganjiju was made in the late Silla period.
