Description

This stupa was move to Daejeokjeon Hall, the main hall of the Gapsa Temple in 1917 from its original location on a mountain behind the temple. Octagon is the key note of the whole structure, which gently diminishes in size from bottom to top. The base is three-tiered. The designs of lion, cloud and dragon are sculptured on the lower base stone while a heavenly figure playing a musical instrument is carved into the upper base. The Four Guardian Kings with their symbolic instruments are carved on four other sides and two locked doors on both sides of the main portion. The roof stone is adorned with an elegant design as if it were a wooden structure. A newly carved sacred jewel is placed on the top. The style and sculpture indicate that the stupa dates back to the early Goryeo Dynasty.
