Description
This painting depicts the scene of Shakyamuni preaching the Lotus Sutra at Vulture Peak, Gijjhakuta Hill. This type of large-sized painting used to be hung in the front courtyard of a temple hall at an open-air sermon session or ritual. Made on hemp cloth, the painting measures 6.87m (L) by 4.23m (W). Red color is used a lot, with the overall work appearing to be bright with the use of green and yellow colors. The letters written on it say that the painting was made by Singyeom, Deokhui, and Gyeongyun in 1649 (the 27th year of King Injo’s reign). Shakyamuni Buddha sitting at the center wears a stern look on his square face. His imposing body exudes a dignified air. The robe is hung only on the left shoulder. The right hand is hanging down, and his left hand is resting on top of the knee. The eight bodhisattvas at the bottom tier and the ten disciples in the middle tier surround Shakyamuni Buddha, showing a symmetrical composition.
