Description

This type of large-sized painting used to be hung in the front courtyard of a temple hall at an open-air sermon session or ritual. This hanging painting portrays an oval-faced Rocana Buddha wearing a crown larger than the other images, with the two leading bodhisattvas, the two leading disciples, and the Four Guardian Kings surrounding Rocana Buddha at the center. The round head portion of the mandorla contains seven miniature images of Buddha. Rocana Buddha has the letter 卍 (Buddhist swastika) on his bosom. His two hands are held up to the shoulder level, with the thumbs facing the middle fingers. The painting is simply gorgeous with red-colored robes and knots along with the round adornments on the lapel. The images surrounding Rocana Buddha are placed symmetrically. Rocana Buddha is flanked by the two leading disciples. Portrayed below them are the two leading bodhisattvas surrounded by the Four Guardian Kings. The piece was painted mostly in red and green, with clouds displayed here and there in the background. Bright, clear-cut colors add to its gorgeousness.
