Description

This is a complete Buddha statue with the whole body, pedestal and mandorla. The usnisa (a protuberance symbolizing supreme wisdom), shaped like a topknot on the curly hair is low and not very noticeable. The plump round face shows the strong will of the Buddha. The ears are short and the three wrinkles on the neck are clearly visible. The shoulders are broad and the chest is well developed. The arms and legs are voluptuous and strong. The robe covers the left shoulder, and has simple thin parallel folds. The main mandorla takes the form of a boat while the head mandorla and body mandorla are distinguished by two lines. There are spark patterns and flying angel patterns carved on the edges of the head mandorla. The square pedestal is divided into the top, middle and bottom parts. The middle part is square with two Bodhisattva statues on each side, which are all elaborately carved. The bottom part has a panel decoration on its top and lotus flower patterns on its bottom. Below that, two of the eight guardian demons are carved into one side. This seated stone Buddha is plump and flexible, with emphasis on volume. This is an outstanding 9th century Buddha statue with its excellent carving techniques, pedestal style and elegant decorations.
