Description

During the transit period from Goryeo to Joseon, Goryeo inlaid celadon gave way to buncheong pottery - a type of stoneware that is different from white porcelain in both shape and pattern. Buncheongsagi is a shortened name of buncheong hoecheongsagi that refers to the kind of ware that is coated with white clay first, and then decorated with various patterns in free style. With 19.1 cm height, 5.7 cm diameter (flare) and 10 cm diameter (bottom), this buncheong ware basically resembles Goryeo celadon. However, it differs in that it exhibits coated surface with china clay and decorative patterns in variety, all of which suggests that it was produced in the early Joseon Dynasty. This porcelain wears a bead-string around the neck, and ornamental patterns of small chrysanthemum on the shoulder that is rimmed with inlaid lotus flowers. On the even surface of the belly back and forth, ornamental floral patterns are in the shape of a diamond inside of which lotus buds are being inlaid white and black. On the surface of both sides, there are stretching bindweeds inlaid black on the basis of stamped chrysanthemum. The base is inlaid with lotus buds, wearing a band of beads around the bottom. It is unusual to note that the pattern colors of the bindweeds on both sides and the lotus buds around the shoulder are the same as that of the entire body. With long legs supporting the body relatively big in size, it still looks stable and well proportioned.
