Description
This Gilt-bronze Seated Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva at Dosoram Hermitage of Seonunsa Temple wears a hempen hood, which is the style of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva pictures of the late Goryeo Dynasty. With its hempen hood, necklace decorations and flat chest, this Bodhisattva statue is nearly identical to the Gilt-bronze Seated Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (Treasure No. 279) except the more normal narrow forehead band that doesn't cover the ears. The Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is different from other Buddha statues because it wears a hempen hood and saves people suffering in hell. The round face has an elegant expression and the line from the neck to the shoulder is smooth. The upper and lower bodies are balanced and the belt on the stomach is realistic. It is seated with the real life looking right foot on top of the left knee. The right hand is held to the chest with the thumb and middle finger put together. The left hand is held to the stomach in the shape of a small wagon wheel. The thick clothing covering both shoulders is knotted with a band and there are some simple folds in the clothing of the legs. This Bodhisattva statue is graceful and elegant. It is regarded as the greatest piece that substantially reflects the Buddha statue style of the late Goryeo Dynasty.
