Description

Ksitigarbha (Bodhisattva of suffering) is a Bodhisattva who has given up becoming a Buddha and who stands at the entrance to Hell to lead people suffering in Hell to Paradise. Thus, paintings of him also display Dharma protectors or judges. This triad portrays Ksitigarbha in an overblown figure at the center with his head in green background and a round mandorla behind the head. He sits on a rock, with a transparent magic bead held on the right hand. His left hand is placed on the lap. Standing beside him is Buddhist Saint Domyeong holding a long cane. The Ghost King is holding a casket containing scriptures. Down below, a lion lies prostrate, agape. This piece has a unique composition compared to the other Buddhist paintings of the Goryeo Period (918-1392), with the main figure Ksitigarbha sitting on a rock, the two standing beside him on an imaginary oblique line rather than on a horizontal line, and the lion having its head touch the floor. Overall, it has been preserved in good condition despite some repairs. Technically, it follows the style of the Buddhist paintings of the Goryeo Period.
