Description

This 7-volume book, which contains musical scores of music prevalent during the reign of King Sejo, was compiled by Seo Myeong-eung in 1759 (the 35th year of the reign of King Yeongjo). The book measures 31.4㎝ (L) by 44.5㎝ (W). [Daeak jeonbo (Former Edition of Scores of Great Music), which contains 22 pieces, was missing during the Sino-Japanese War.] Volume 1 contains Sogakboseo and eight other pieces during the reign of King Sejo. Volume 2 features Siyongbotaepyeongdo and another piece. Volume 3 contains Siyonghyangakbo and two other pieces. Volume 4 features Siyonghyangakbo and another piece. Volume 5 contains Siyonghyangakbo and four other pieces. Volume 6 features Siyonghyangakbo and five other pieces. Volume 7 contains Dongdong and three other pieces. The contents of Volumes 5 ~ 7 are particularly precious since they date back to the later Goryeo Period or the early Joseon Dynasty. This is a precious historical material as the first musical scores compiled by a government office, containing music pieces of different periods including those of the reign of King Sejo. It also includes diverse hyangak (local) music scores, including Jeongeup handed down from the Goryeo Dynasty, and early forms of jeongak (court) music scores that had gone through diverse changes and process of creation until the late Joseon Period.
