Description

This Seated Stone Buddha is located on the Yongseondae Cliff near the Gwallyongsa Temple. The statue is seated on a tall pedestal with the mandorla missing. The usnisa (a protuberance symbolizing supreme wisdom), shaped like a topknot on top of the curly nabal (i.e. twirled up and around in a seashell-shaped fashion) is relatively high. The square face is plump, elegant and smiling. The torso is relatively small for the head, but the posture is still stable. The hand on top of the knee is thick but detailed. The robe covering both shoulders is tight on the body and the folds are parallel at regular intervals. The pedestal is divided into the top, middle and bottom parts. The top part is shaped like a hemisphere with lotus flowers carved on it. The middle part is octagonal with a column pattern engraved on each corner. The bottom part is square with a lotus pattern relief carved on it. Judging from the small torso, folds in the clothing and octagonal lotus flower pedestal, it was made in the 9th century during the late Unified Silla period.
