Description

This pagoda appears to be made of bricks, but it’s built by piling up natural stones that are cut into the shape of a brick. Although very rare, stone brick pagodas were mostly built during the Unified Silla period and the Goryeo Dynasty. This three-story pagoda sitting on a single story pedestal is considered to be particularly important for its size and style. The square pedestal is made of neatly cut stone blocks with a capstone on top of them. The body of the pagoda is also made of stone blocks with a capstone. The first tier is the tallest, with the second and third tiers narrows down as it reaches the top. The capstone, with three step supports, is larger than the pedestal. The edges of the roof look like a staircase just as in the case of brick pagodas, while the eaves are slightly curved upwards. All the tiers are made with the same method. There is only one piece of stone slab on top of the pagoda. Built in the former territory of Baekje, this pagoda closely resembles Baekje style pagodas, which usually have features such as pedestal and each of the tiers made of different stones and capstones that are larger than the pedestal just like a wooden pagoda. This pagoda is comparable to the Five-Story Stone Pagoda at Jeongnimsa Temple Site which is regarded as the representative work of Baekje. In terms of its size and style, this is considered to be one of the most important pagodas in Jeolla-do.
