Description
Jo Yeong-bok (1672-1728) was a civilian official serving King Sukjong. One of the portraits depicts him in a white scholastic robe, and the other, in an official robe. Jo Yeong-bok passed the civil service exam in 1705 (the 31st year of King Sukjong’s reign) and climbed the ladder of officialdom. The one portraying him seated in a scholastic robe (measuring 125㎝ by 76㎝) was painted by his younger brother Jo Yeong-seok (1686∼1761). Both hands are visible, which is a rarity in a portrait painted during the Joseon Period (1392-1910). The portrait vividly depicts a Confucian scholar with a dignified look. In the other portrait (measuring 154㎝ by 79㎝), the subject in an official robe looks to the right while seated on a chair. It was painted by Jin Jae-hae, a well-known painter of that time. The minute and exquisite portrayal of the subject draws attention, showing the typical outward appearance of a government official at the end of the 17th Century and the early 18th Century. Painted in 1724 (the 4th year of King Gyeongjong’s reign) and the following year (the 1st year of King Yeongjo’s reign), they are regarded as good materials for those studying the features of the paintings of the Joseon Dynasty.
