Description

Seokbinggo is a stone storage room for ice. This one, built in the 13th year of the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon, was used for preserving sweetfish for the king, caught in the nearby Nakdonggang River. Located on the bank of the river that flows from west to east, it is laid out from the south to north along the river. Unusually, the entrance was made facing the north. Along the stairs inside, the storage floor was sloped, with a waterway to the river in the middle. Four rainbow shaped arches support the ceiling. The gaps between the bases were filled with long stones laid side to side. In the ceiling, there were holes for ventilation to adjust the inside temperature. Though it is not large, it is in a good state of preservation. As the location of the stone ice storage is very critical, the storage was moved to a higher place with the construction of Andong Dam, to prevent it being submerged. But in the past, it would have been easy to carry the ice because the river ran right by the storage.
