Description
As a high-ranking official during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), Bak Jung-son (1412-1466) had an exceptional talent for astronomy. The two stone lamps are made of granite stones. The one in front of the tomb of Bak Jung-son is composed of the fire box (where the fire is lit) and the base platform; the other one for his wife has the roof stone with a lotus-shaped bead placed on the fire box. The former has four holes at the sides of the fire box: the holes in the north and the south are square-shaped (symbolizing the earth), the hole in the east is round (sun), and the one in the west is half-moon-shaped (moon). The latter looks thinner than the former. The four sides of the fire box are all square-shaped. The stone lamps are made of one stone each. The different shapes of the side walls are noteworthy. The unique shapes, which are a very rare case, make the stone lamps historically and academically valuable.
