Description

A Japanese, Ms. Takahara Himiko, donated this one -- which had been kept by her family -- to the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage of Korea in 1999. It is in very good condition save for some damage to the cannon (yongnyu). A sash-like ornamental space surrounds the flat top and the bottom. The spaces contain semicircle and scrolling vine patterns. In particular, scrolling vine patterns are shallowly inscribed on the edges of the trapezoid-shaped yugwak (square-shaped ornamental space with nine lotus flower-shaped nipples arranged symmetrically) adjacent to the top sash. The bell has two dangjwa (part where the rod hits when tolling a bell) near the bottom sash. It is surrounded by a double-circled edge with scrolling vine patterns in it. Four images of Apsaras kneeling on clouds with the two hands clasped are portrayed between dangjwa. The images of Apsaras look more conspicuous than the others. The bell is presumed to have been made during the early Goryeo Period (918-1392) following the style of the Unified Silla Period (676 - 935), based on its appearance, patterns, and composition ratio.
