Description

In traditional calligraphy, one drops some water on the inkstone and then rubs an inkstick on the inkstone to make Indian ink. Called yeonjeok (yandi in Chinese), this container is used to contain water for such purpose. This one, made of white porcelain, has an octagonal side. Such water containers were made chiefly of celadon porcelain during the Goryeo Period (918-1392) and of white porcelain during the Joseon Period (1392-1910). The top of the water container displays cloud and dragon patterns cubically and vividly. The octagonal side shows eight beautiful scenes of the place where Xiao River and Xiang River meet (called “Eight Views of Xiaoxiang”), portrayed with skillful brush strokes. Its esthetic quality, including the tightly arranged composition, looks conspicuous. One part of the octagonal side contains a poem praising the beautiful scenery under the title An Autumnal Moon over Dongtingghu Lake. The patterns portrayed with underglaze cobalt blue and the use of diverse techniques of expression make one assume that the water container was made in the 19th Century when attempts were made to develop new directions in porcelain production. The painting skills and portrayal of vivid patterns on the top carry the features of the period when the object was made.
