Description

This is a gilt-bronze standing Bodhisattva statue found during the investigation of Baekje temple sites in Gunsu-ri, Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do in 1936. It is wearing a decorative crown and the thick hair on the sides of the face is hanging down to the shoulders. The round plump face is smiling realistically, and the gentleness of the Baekje people can be seen here. The body is covered in thick clothing and there is a ‘V’ shaped decoration on the chest. The clothing crosses the abdomen in an ‘X’ shape and flows from the shoulder to look like fins. The hem of the clothing comes to the ankles in ‘U’ shaped folds. The body is dignified. On the right hand, the ring finger is bent and the little finger pointing upwards in its distinctive symbolic gesture. The left hand is hanging down with the back of the hand showing. The clothing and hands of this statue reflect the time period it was made in. The wide face and full smile are characteristics of Baekje period statues. This statue, with a realistic Baekje people’s face, seems to have been made in the sixth century.
