Description
This is a small, 15.1 cm high, piece which excellently displays characteristics of Bodhisattva images of the Three Kingdoms period. It is wearing an unusual crown and the face is long compared to the body. A serene smile is on the eyes and mouth. The clothing completely conceals the small dignified and strong body. It is symmetrical, crossing in an ‘X’, and it flows with strength. The hands are in the common position of Three Kingdoms Buddha statues, but are large compared to the body. The left hand is hanging down with the little finger and ring finger bent. The right hand is held up with the fingers spread out. Under the feet, there is an upside down rounded triangular pedestal. Long stakes made to attach to another lower pedestal remain, but the pedestal itself is gone. The statue is almost complete except for its missing pedestal and mandorla (Buddhist halo of light). The hands and clothing crossed in an ‘X’ are typical characteristics of Three Kingdoms Bodhisattva statues.
