Description
This type of large-sized painting used to be hung in the front courtyard of a temple hall at an open-air sermon session or ritual. In this piece [measuring 1170㎝ (L) by 486㎝ (W)], the image of Lord Buddha fills up the canvas, with images of the Sea God and his daughter placed beside Lord Buddha’s feet. The image of Lord Buddha carries small-sized facial features and clearly expressed usnisa (a protuberance symbolizing supreme wisdom). The Buddha has turban shell-shaped hair on the head. Large-sized beads are placed on top of the head and near the forehead. The crown worn by the Buddha is adorned with lattice patterns, displaying what was prevalent in the late 18th Century. The piece was made by several monks, including Takhaeng, in 1727 (the 3rd year of King Yeongjo’s reign. It shows a hazy and mystic atmosphere with the use of green/red-based gradation technique and mung bean, pink, and yellow soil colors.
