Description

This is a slightly damaged but fairly well preserved stone statue of a seated Buddha at Ganwolsa Temple site in Deungeok-ri, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. The usnisa (a protuberance symbolizing supreme wisdom), shaped like a large topknot, is hard to distinguish from the curly hair. The round and smooth face with a neat mouth, long eyes and small ears gives a mild, human-like feeling. The shoulders are narrow and the body is broad and round, lacking in volume. The thin clothing covering the shoulders is expressed in ‘U’ shaped ripples. Judging by the plump face and body, the dullness of usnisa, and the narrow shoulders, this statue dates back to the ninth century.
