Description

This was originally located in the northwestern part of the Yongamsa Temple site. It was largely destroyed, but in 1962, it was restored at its original location. The broken parts, including the base stone, the middle stylobate and the body, were all made newly during restoration work. In particular, the middle stylobate had originally been engraved with a cloud and dragon design, but only a simple pillar design is engraved on the edge in the restored stylobate. A cloud pattern is deeply engraved on each surface of the lower stylobate, and a heavenly image to protect the Buddha-dharma is engraved in relief in the center of the cloud pattern. Its technical skill is outstanding. The upper stylobate is engraved with lotus flower patterns. There is a flat base under the shallow roof stone. There is a protruding floral decoration at the place where the roof ridge and the line of eaves cross. The incline of the roof plane is gentle and the lotus flower pattern is surrounded by thin belts on the top of the roof. Although the head decoration is not splendid, the structures, which have symbolic meaning, are laid one after another. Though it is not certain for whom this stupa was built, it is assumed to date from the early Goryeo Dynasty. It is well balanced overall, and all the parts are octagonal so it is faithful to the fundamental form. There are also some components of stone Buddha, stone lantern and pagoda around this stupa.
