Description

The image of Shakyamuni Buddha at the center is flanked by the Bhaisajyaguru Buddha and four bodhisattvas (presumed to be Sunlight Bodhisattva, Moonlight Bodhisattva, Avalokitesvara, and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva). The image of Shakyamuni Buddha is larger than that of the Medicine Buddha and is portrayed to have a body of robust build. Beads are displayed on the top of the head and near the forehead. The round, plump face wears a benevolent smile. The robe is hung on both shoulders, with the right arm revealed under the robe as a typical style displayed by Buddha images made in the early 17th Century and thereafter. The fingers of one hand point to the bottom, with the other hand placed on the lap, palm facing up (gesture of subjugating demons). The realistically portrayed hands make one see the sculptor’s skills. As for the image of the Medicine Buddha placed to the right of the Lord Buddha, it shows a style similar to that of the Lord Buddha in terms of the following: the upper body slightly bent forward; the facial expression; the short neck; the imposing shoulders; the realistically portrayed hands; the voluminous body, etc. The image of the Medicine Buddha is smaller than that of Shakyamuni Buddha, displaying an Amida hand sign. The face and the ears are longer than those of Shakyamuni Buddha. Its robe wrinkles also look more complicated than those of Shakyamuni Buddha. The four bodhisattvas display well-proportioned, “S”-shaped bodies, with the abdomens slightly bulging forward. They all wear gorgeous-looking crowns and accessories like earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Sunlight Bodhisattva and Moonlight Bodhisattva standing next to the Medicine Buddha display the sun and the moon, respectively, at the center of their crown. Their left hand is held up to shoulder level, whereas their right hand holds lotus twigs. Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva standing next to Amitabha Buddha hold their right hand up to shoulder level, with their left hand facing downward. They hold a lotus twig and a kundika bottle, respectively. The robe hung on both shoulders and the shape of the hands and feet are portrayed as natural and realistic.
