Description

These are documents (nine in eight types) related to Sin Gyeong-haeng (1559-1623). Having passed the civil service exam in 1577 (the 10th year of King Seonjo’s reign), he served as Hansan-Gun Administrator and then as military commander in Chungcheong-do. He rendered distinguished services to the state by crushing the rebels led by Yi Mong-hak in July 1596 (the 29th year of King Seonjo’s reign). He was given the honorary title Lord Yeongseong by the central government and was posthumously designated as Protocol Minister. Cheongnan-gongsin-gyoseo, one of these documents, is a royal certificate issued to Sin Gyeong-haeng in recognition of his distinguished service in crushing the rebels led by Yi Mong-hak in 1604. This document contains detailed remarks about his service; thus, it is a precious material that tells us about the awards presented to meritorious retainers and provides information on the style of a written royal document presented to retainers. As one of these documents, Yuseo was a secret instruction stating that he should follow only the King’s order for the mobilization of troops in the event of rebellion or war. It was issued to him in June 1608 (the 41st year of King Seonjo’s reign) when he was designated as a military commander in Chungcheong-do. There are three other documents that tell us how Sin posthumously received the honorary title Chungik. Two of the documents show that the Instructor General’s Office and the Censor General’s Office consented to the presentation of said honorary title to Sin in 1811 (the 11th year of King Sunjo’s reign). Jeungsi-gyoji is a royal certificate for the presentation of said honorary title to Sin in 1812. Joeun-singong-sijang is an article composed by Kim I-yeong (1755-1845) about Sin Gyeong-haeng’s life. Cheongnan-wonjong-gongsin-rokgwon is a metal piece inscribed with the content of meritorious service (i.e., crushing the rebels led by Yi Mong-hak) performed by Sin Gyeong-haeng. It was presented to his son Sin Myeon in April 1605 by Gongsindogam (Government Office of Records for Meritorious Subjects). There are other documents on the distinguished services rendered by Sin Deuk-jung, Sin Gyeong-haeng’s fourth-generation grandson, and Sin Gwang-u, Sin Gyeong-haeng’s sixth-generation grandson. These documents are important materials for those studying bibliography, history, and matters regarding meritorious retainers and are biographical materials concerning Sin Gyeong-haeng.
