Description

This book is composed of Volume II of the Brahmajala Sutta translated by Indian monk Kumarajiva from Houqin and Subosalgyebeop (Way to the Attainment of Bodhisattva-hood) compiled by Yanshou from the Northern Song Dynasty of China and Subosalgyeui (Formalities related to the Attainment of Bodhisattva-hood) written by Huisi from the Chen Dynasty of China, both of which explain the procedures and regulations regarding the Buddhist confirmation ceremony and the Buddhist seminary for teaching the Buddhist commandments that should be followed by bodhisattvas. The original Brahmajala Sutra is composed of 112 volumes and 61 chapters according to Seng Zhao’s commentary included in the book, but the entire Buddhist scriptures were not translated into Chinese. The book consists of two volumes, but only the second volume has been adopted by the Buddhist order in Korea and referred to regarding the religious commandments that must be followed by Buddhists. It defines the moral stances and conduct of bodhisattvas, the way they should act and speak, the ten virtuous acts, and the ten important Buddhist precepts that must be observed. It is a scripture that has had tremendous influence on the organization and maintenance of the Buddhist order in Korea from the Silla period (57 BC- 935 AD). Judging from the condition of the print, the details of the epilogue, and the fact that the writings are printed on both front and back sides of the paper, the book is presumed to have been printed from woodblocks engraved by the people of Goryeo in the Yuan Dynasty of China after 1306 or thereafter.
