Description

Built in the mid-Joseon period, Mucheomdang House is part of the head family’s house buildings of Yi Eon-jeok (pen-name: Hoejae, 1491-1553), a scholar of neo-Confucian doctrine and a civil minister. The house has a ㄱ-shaped layout and measures five kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) at the front and three kan at the sides. It is divided into three parts: a central main hall measuring three kan, flanked by two floor-heated rooms, all laid on round and square pillars. The space between the front pillars of the main hall opens out to the exterior, and the side in the direction of the upper floor is open too. A part of the upper floor facing the main hall is open. The house is a detached upper-class house whose occupants would typically receive guests, read books and relax. The house displays simple but sophisticated building techniques and functions as a 'byeoldang', or separate house. The house also contains various artifacts related to Yi Eon-jeok.
