Description
This jar with a robust shape flaunts a bold inlaid surface design. The mouth rim is bent outward at a sharp angle, and the short and thick neck has curved sides, in a manner to echo the curved lines of the wide body. Past its broad and voluminous shoulder, the vase tapers slowly to a narrow waist before it flares out slightly toward the base. The overall shape feels opulent yet slender. The surface is filled with three large peony blossoms with foliage, inlaid with white slip, in a manner to leave practically no empty space. The flowers and leaves with forceful and rough contours are imbued with lively expressiveness. The surface is coated with a thin layer of a clear glaze with a light green tint, and the glaze appears ochre green at the mouth rim and near the neck. Meanwhile, the full-bloomed white peony flowers overlaid with a pale green hue have the otherworldly beauty of imaginary flowers. This tall jar-shaped vase, impressive for the unconstrained beauty of its inlaid peony flowers and foliage, coupled with elegant lotus and scroll bands, is an eminent example of a celadon vase from the heyday of Goryeo celadon-making.
