Description
The production date and identity of the artist who produced this painting of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, are unknown. The paint is discolored and faded in places, and there are traces where the picture has been retouched and painted over. However, the painting is identical in composition and style to other paintings of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva produced in the 14th century during the Goryeo Dynasty, such as the one by Seo Gu-bang produced in 1323, currently the whereabout of Japan. They reveal such a close resemblance in terms of the composition, the use of brilliant, vivid colors and figures depicted with elaborate and elegant brushwork that one would presume they were painted from the same copy. This suggests that this particular painting was also produced in the same period, as it exhibits the consummate artistry of the Goryeo Dynasty. The painting is of great historical and artistic value, as it displays the characteristic features of Buddhist paintings of the Goryeo Dynasty in terms of the composition and expressive techniques, and exhibits considerable artistry that is comparable to the other two paintings of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva that have been designated as treasures, and also as there are only two to three extant paintings of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva from the Goryeo Dynasty in Korea.
