Description

These stone figures are placed in pairs on each side of the entrance to the Tomb of King Wonseong (Historic Site No. 26) in Gyeongju. They include four Muinseok (stone figures of warriors) and Muninseok (stone figures of scholars), four stone lions, and two stone pillars. The stone figures of warriors were influenced by the styles of the countries bordering Western China, and therefore constitute important historical evidence of the cultural exchanges between East and West at that time. The sculptures are also very lifelike, exhibiting the realistic sculptural styles of stone figures at the royal tomb of King Seongdeok, which were made when the Unified Silla Period was at its zenith. Compared with the stone statues from the Royal Tomb of King Heungdeok of the Silla Dynasty, these stone statues are much more dynamic and full of life, and are representative of the realistic sculptures that were prevalent during the 8th century. The stone statues are valuable relics that capture the quintessence of the glorious Silla culture, and are valuable to the study of sculptures of the Silla Dynasty.
