Description

This is a documentary style of painting that records a national event on a ten-panel folding screen. It depicts the national ceremony held at Injeongjeon Hall in Changdeokgung Palace on February 14, 1874 (the 11th year of the reign of King Gojong) to celebrate the birth of the Crown Prince (later King Sunjong, 1874-1926). The ceremony is depicted across eight panels, with the names and ranks of the participating government officials inscribed on the far left and right panels. The ceremony occupies the center of the folding screen, with other buildings, trees, and mountain peaks depicted on each side. The figures and buildings are depicted in rich, dark colors with a keen eye for fine detail. The ceremony is represented as a bird’s-eye-view with an angular perspective. The pillars and walls of Injeongjeon Hall are depicted much higher to show the events taking place inside. However, the expressive techniques, coloration and brushwork are not exceptional, and the scale is small, indicating that this folding screen, rather than being displayed inside the palace, was more likely to have been the possession of some government official. Despite this, it is of considerable historical value as it is a rare work among the folding screen paintings produced to depict national events at that time.
