Description
Celadon plaques that have survived to this day in their original form or that can be restored to their original state are few and far between. Among them this celadon plaque is an exceptional work of art inlaid with a pictorial motif. The harmonious arrangement of the motif and the blank space, and the vivid contrast between the black and white inlay and the iron-brown underglaze, exhibit a considerable degree of artistry. Various decorative techniques are effectively employed to portray the different parts of both the bird and the tree in different shades of color, including the rendering of the main parts in black and white inlay, and the coloring of the body and tail in iron-brown underglaze. This celadon plaque is a valuable work of art for ceramics research as it exhibits distinctive decorative techniques; the pictorial motif is represented with dexterous skill; and celadon plaques of such a small size are very rare.
