Description
This celadon water dropper is in the shape of a one-horned giraffe lying on its stomach with its legs bent under its body. The stem of a pomegranate serves as the water inlet, while the giraffe’s mouth serves as the spout through which water is poured. The giraffe is holding in its mouth the stem of a lotus leaf which extends toward its back, which is in turn decorated with pomegranate leaves and stem. The whole body, including the underside of the base, is covered in glaze. Three silica spur marks are visible at the bottom of the base, which is where the water dropper was supported during firing. This celadon water dropper is the only extant example of celadon in the shape of a giraffe made during the 12th century when Goryeo celadon was at its zenith. It is an exceptional work of art exhibiting a simple yet refined sculptural beauty, and celadon glaze of a superior quality.
