Description
This Buncheong memorial tablet and accompanying flat bottle with stamped design were both made of the same clay and glaze, using the same technique: after the clay was molded into the desired shape on the potter’s wheel, the sides were beaten flat to form a square shape and the edges were further sharpened with a knife. Both works bear marks at the base where clays spurs with a mixture of sand were attached to the body, suggesting that the two pieces were produced simultaneously. The production date is inscribed on the memorial tablet. The flat bottle with stamped design, in particular, is a work of considerable artistry, and is of immense historical value in terms of Buncheong ceramic research. It exhibits an acute aesthetic sensibility through the techniques by which the sides were flattened, the edges sharpened, the patterns carved, and the relatively large mouth was attached to the body.
