Description

Made during the Goryeo Dynasty, this celadon ewer has the shape of a turtle sitting on a lotus flower. It is 17.2 cm tall and 20.2 cm long. The face of the turtle is expressed in an extremely elaborate and vivid way, and some parts are plated with gold. The mouth of the ewer, attached on the back, has a design of closed lotus petals. The handle is shaped like two twisted lotus stems. The back of the turtle is engraved with hexagonal patterns each inscribed with the Chinese letter "王.” Designs of white and black spots are decorated sparsely on the handle, with white spots adorning the area between flowers on the lotus base. The ewer is coated with thick jade green glaze. The celadon ewer is well-balanced and well-proportioned on the whole. It is an excellent example showing the characteristics of celadon made in the early 12th century: celadon with forms of animals, plants, and people were very popular during that period.
