Description

This Buddhist temple bell is regarded as an invaluable relic because it sheds light on how the temple bell styles of the early Joseon Dynasty developed by incorporating the characteristics of bells of the late Goryeo Dynasty, which were strongly influenced by Chinese bells, with the styles and artistic elements of traditional Korean bells. The bell is a monumental artifact in that it became a prototype for temple bells of the early Joseon Dynasty, and thus provides insight into the development of temple bells of the early Joseon Dynasty. This bronze bell is a work of considerable artistry in terms of its size, as well as the designs and the casting techniques used to produce it. As it was commissioned by the royal household, government artisans from each field were summoned to participate in the project. The inscription on the bell indicates the organizational hierarchy of the people who participated in casting the bell, thus providing valuable insights into various aspects of early Joseon society.
