Description

This 5.38-meter high Buddha statue consists of the body of the Buddha and the mandorla (Buddhist halo of light), which expresses the light emanating from the body of the Buddha, hewn from one stone. The usnisa (protuberance on top of the head symbolizing supreme wisdom) can be seen on top of its bald head, and it has a quadrangle face that gives a considerable sense of volume. The three wrinkles clearly expressed on the neck represent the samdo (three ways to attain enlightenment). The beobui (sacerdotal robes) covering both shoulders has U-shaped folds running down to the ankles. Since the two arms are covered by thick clothes, only the hands are exposed. The right hand is hanging down with the palm facing outward, and the left arm is held upward. The mandorla (Buddhist halo of light), which has the shape of a boat, is made up of dugwang (light radiating from the head) behind the head and singwang (light emanating from the body) behind the body. The dugwang is carved with lotus flower patterns, and the singwang, with cloud patterns. Its plump face, unrealistic expression of the body, and formally expressed folds in the clothing are elements characteristic of the popular Buddha statue style made during the early Goryeo Dynasty. It is especially similar to the Stone Standing Buddha at the Yongdamsa Temple Site in Namwon (Treasure No. 42) in size, style, and form.
