Description
These documents were excavated from Myeongbujeon Hall, Palsangjeon Hall and the statues of the Four Guardian Kings at Bulgapsa Temple in Yeonggwang. They consist of a few books published during the Goryeo Dynasty and a larger number of books published during the early Joseon Dynasty, including the then popular Mahayana Sutras, such as Beophwagyeong (The Lotus Sutra) and Geumganggyeong (The Diamond Sutra); four types of textbooks taught on mid-level courses in Buddhist academies; books about Zen Buddhism; and documents relating to Buddhist memorial services for spirits wandering in water and on land. They constitute a valuable resource for the study of Buddhism in the early Joseon Dynasty. Also found together with the books were thirty-one prayers made to arhats and the ten underworld kings, and Buddhist literature imported from China, which had a strong influence on Buddhist history of Korea. As such, these works constitute a valuable resource for the study of Buddhist beliefs and culture in Korea.
