Description
This picture of Confucius and his disciples was painted in color on as sheet of silk fabric 65 cm wide by 170 cm long. In the picture, Confucius sitting on the center of a platform and is depicted larger than his pupils. Beneath the platform, the pupils are sitting at either side of the teacher and looking to their front, so they are facing slightly sideward. As they are wearing square-shaped caps and holding batons, it looks rather like a scene of some kind of ceremony. As this picture, which was painted in 1513, the 8th year of the reign of King Jungjong of the Joseon Dynasty, is a copy of the original, it functions as a documentary painting. With its symmetric columnar composition and its birds-eye view and perspective, it is still considered important as it had a great influence on the documentary paintings of royal ceremonies during the Joseon Dynasty.
