Description
Bak Yu-myeong (1582-1640) passed the state examination for military service in 1620 (the 12th year of King Gwanghaegun’s reign). For his role in the coup of 1623 he was appointed a third-rank meritorious subject, and later served as a senior royal secretary and head of the Five Military Commands. He is depicted in a ceremonial robe with a rank badge with tiger design, symbolic of his status as a military official, and seated on a chair in the typical style of 17th-century Joseon portraits of meritorious subjects. The round shoulders look somewhat exaggerated. The black hat has a low crown and a side panel of the robe sticks out from the back. The carpet is quite colorful. Another Portrait of Bak, presumed to be a copy, is also handed down. The subject looks almost identical but the copy has clearer colors. As the overall quality falls short, however, only the original has been designated a Treasure.
