Description
O Jae-sun (1727-1792) was an erudite scholar who served in high government posts during the reign of King Jeongjo. He headed the Office of the Inspector-General, Office of Special Advisors and the Royal Secretariat, among other posts. This Portrait was painted by Yi Myeong-gi when O was 65 years old, according to a paper tag attached at the back below the scroll handle. The full-frontal portrait is characterized by skillful brush strokes adroitly describing the facial complexion, an obviously different technique from portrait painting of the previous era when ink and wash was mainly employed. The clouds and treasures patterns on the robe are also effectively expressed with strong contrast of light and dark along the folds to express depth. The embroidered twin crane design on the rank badge was carefully rendered, making the texture come vividly alive. Western painting technique was partially applied on this portrait while maintaining the old tradition of line drawing. The result is a high standard of portrait painting successfully conveying the spirit of the subject through the ingenious harmony of likeness and an idealistic aesthetic.
