Description
This pagoda, which is located 2km from the Osaek Mineral Spring in Yangyang, Gangwon-do Province, is typical of the stone pagodas made during the Unified Silla Dynasty. Though it is not certain, it is said that this is the former site of Seongguksa Temple. Judging from other remains as well as this pagoda, the site could have been the location of a small temple. The pagoda consists of a two-layered platform and a three-storied main body. The platform is engraved with pillar patterns, and the top stone of the upper layer has a furrow for rainwater at its four corners. The core stone and roof stone are hewn from one stone each. All the corners of the core stones are engraved with pillar patterns. A square space enshrining a sarira is made in the core stone of the first story. The roof stones slope gently on the upper part, turning swiftly upward at the four corners. The pagoda was restored in 1971. In consideration of the two-layered platform and the thin upper part of the roof stones, it retains the characteristics of the stone pagodas built during the Unified Silla period.
