Description

These five Portraits of Yi Ha-eung (1820-1898, father of King Gojong, also known as Regent Heungseon), which depict the powerful regent in middle and old age, are housed at the Seoul Museum of History. All five portraits were painted by Yi Han-cheol, a first-rate court portraitist at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Three of them were completed in 1869 (the seventh year of the reign of Empire Gojong of the Korean Empire), based on drafts made in 1863, when the regent was 44 years old. The remaining two portraits were painted to celebrate his 60th birthday in 1880 (the 17th year of the reign of Emperor Gojong). These five outstanding portraits by painter Yi Han-cheol exhibit different styles and techniques in the depiction of the subjects’ clothes, hats and other objects. In addition, various writings and relics - such as Yi Ha-eung’s excellent handwriting colophon, a colophon written on red paper kept inside a portrait case, a scroll emblem, decorative tassels, a portrait and case wrapping clothes, and an incense bag, etc. – attest to the elegant style of portraits produced between the end of the Joseon Dynasty and the early days of the short-lived Korean Empire.
