Description
Kim I-an (1722-1791) was a respected leader of the rustic literati, the Confucian literati based in the countryside. He was the son of Kim Won-haeng and great-grandson of Kim Chang-hyeop, who represented the Old Doctrine advocating that human beings and things had the same basic nature. Two portraits of Kim with identical complexions and costumes are handed down: a half-length portrait housed at Yonsei University Museum and a full-length portrait at Ewha Womans University Museum. The half-length portrait at Yonsei University Museum is an outstanding work that precisely but idealistically describes the subject, who is wearing an unusual purple hooded cap. The portrait at Ewha Womans University Museum, though a rare example of a standing, full-length portrait from the Joseon Dynasty, looks stiff and falls short in overall quality. Therefore, only the version at Yonsei University Museum has been designated as a Treasure.
