Description
These three red and white certificates of Indong Jang’s Clan were issued to Jang Gye and Jang Mal-son. The Red Certificate issued to Jang Gye was awarded in 1305, the thirty-first year of the reign of King Chungnyeol of the Goryeo Dynasty, and was written in the semi-cursive style of writing. As for the Red and White Certificates issued to Jang Mal-son, the White Certificate was awarded for passing the civil service examination as the second among seven candidates in 1453, the first year of the reign of King Danjong of the Joseon Dynasty, and the Red Certificate was awarded for his passing the military part of the third grade of the civil service examinations in 1459, the 5th year of the reign of King Sejo. As the Red Certificate issued to Jang Gye is different in form from those of the Joseon Dynasty and has titles such as examiner (jigonggeo) and co-examiner (dongjigonggeo) and names indicated on it, it is a valuable source for the study of the system of civil service examinations of Goryeo.
