Description
Yun Hyo-jeon (1563-1619) passed the higher civil service examination in 1605 and was cited as a first-rank meritorious subject for his role in controlling the suspected Rebellion of Prince Imhae in 1612. But the award was deprived after the coup and subsequent accession of King Injo in 1623. The portrait depicts an official believed to be Yun wearing a ceremonial robe and a silk hat and seated on a chair half turned to the right, with both hands courteously folded under the sleeves. All these follow the typical portrait style of meritorious subjects during the early part of the 17th century. However, the peacock design on the rank badge and the sash do not comply with the rank he gained for meritorious service in 1612. The portrait is therefore assumed to commemorate his posthumous reinstatement and appointment as a first state councilor in 1629 thanks to an appeal by his son, Yun Hyu. The overall composition, style and aesthetic are reminiscent of a portrait known to be of Yu Geun (1549-1627), which has been handed down in the clan head family of his descendants in Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, and designated as Treasure No. 566.
