Description
Gyeongguk daejeon (National Code) is the compendium of basic statutes of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Under orders of King Sejo (r. 1455-1468) compilation of the statutes was undertaken by a group of scholar-officials including Choe Hang, No Sa-sin and Seo Geo-jeong. Through several revisions and expansions the statutes were completed in 1485 (the 16th year of King Seongjong’s reign), providing the basic platform of state administration throughout the Joseon Dynasty. The completed statutes, promulgated in 1485, remained the unalterable laws of Joseon. Therefore, though printed with different types, most of the extant editions are based on the Eulsa daejeon (Grand Eulsa Code). This is Volume 3 of “Yejeon (Code of Rites)” from the Sinmyo daejeon (Grand Sinmyo Code), printed and distributed in the eleventh lunar month of 1470 (the first year of King Seongjong’s reign) and implemented in the first month of the following year. Printed with the first cast of gabin type, this is the oldest volume of the Joseon code extant today and is highly valued for legal and bibliographical research on the Joseon Dynasty.
