Description

These are Volumes one and two of the seven volumes of Geumjang yojipgyeong (Collection of the Essentials of Sutras), compiled by Daoji, a monk of Northern Qi, with focus on anecdotes related with the Buddhist teaching of dependent origination. The book title, Jinzang yaojijing in Chinese, is followed by a table of contents providing 22 chapter headings, which directly leads to an introduction to “Chapter One about Wrong Views.” This in turn leads to the contents of each section, with the section head accompanied by its source presented in small type in double lines. The printing style is typical of Buddhist texts of the 13th-14th centuries during the Goryeo Dynasty. At the center of each plate toward the bottom are engraved the carvers' names, including Hyeonsa, Munhyang and Baekgi, who also participated in the production of printing blocks for the second edition of the Tripitaka Koreana. In view of the state of the blocks, the present volume is assumed to have been printed during the early years of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) with blocks carved during the late Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). Though a mere part of the golden treasury, this is highly valuable as few copies of the book remain today at home or abroad. The table of contents is especially an important source for study of the entire book.
