Description
This large eight-panel folding screen features paintings of two palace events in 1765 (the 41st year of King Yeongjo’s reign). The three panels on the left depict scenes of the king and the grand heir visiting the Hall of Elderly Officials on the 18th day of the eighth lunar month of that year to pay respects to eight senior officials over 70 years of age and present them wine made at the Office of Brewery. The next three panels have scenes from the rites for granting titles of nobility at Gyeonghyeondang, the Hall of Shining Wisdom, in Gyeonghuigung Palace, on the 11th day of the 10th lunar month in the same year, in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of King Yeongjo's birth. The first panel at far left has a record of the king's visit to the Hall of Elderly Officials, written by Yi Jeong-bo, and the last panel has a seating list of the officials. This is a very rare example of a folding screen featuring documentary pictures of two events in the palace. There are two albums recording the same visit of King Yeongjo to the Hall of Elderly Officials, titled Chillim seonondo (King Presents Wine to Subjects) and Yeongsugak song (Verse on the Pavilion of Longevity), handed down in the collection of Jangseogak, the royal library. This screen is noteworthy also for the pictures of the rites for awarding titles of nobility, conducted later in the same year. It is important in that the documentary pictures clearly show the style and level of 18th-century court painting.
