Description
A meticulously proofread version of Jabi-doryang-chambeop (Repentance Ritual of the Great Compassion), Part 5 (one of ten parts) contains the part of the Buddhist scriptures that states that a person will be cleared of sin, blessed, and overcome the pain of reincarnation upon receiving a divine response to a prayer to the Buddha through the repentance ritual. It is one of the many Buddhist scriptures distributed and published until the Joseon period after the first woodblock engraving was produced in 1316 (the 3rd year of the reign of King Chungsuk). The method of binding of the copy kept at Manbulseonwon Temple follows the prevailing trend of the Goryeo Period. The contents related to the names (Taejo and Seonjong) of Goryeo’s founder and thirteenth king reveal that this version was based on a woodblock book published during the Goryeo Period. The copy kept at Manbulseonwon Temple appears to have been published during the early Joseon Period, given the quality of the paper, the condition of the printing, and the use of gugyeol (a method of writing Korean according to the phonetic or semantic values of Chinese characters designed to facilitate understanding of texts written in classical Chinese). Researchers regard it as an important material for studies on the bibliography and history of Buddhism and Hangeul because the printing is excellent, the copy has been preserved well, and gugyeol is marked throughout the entire main text.
