Description

The Stone Pedestal and Mandorla at Daeseungsa Temple in Mulgeol-ri, Naecheon-myeon, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do has survived without a Buddha figure. The mandorla, undamaged and forming a complete shape of a pear, features sculpted lotus and vine motifs, surrounded by intricate and sumptuous flame designs. Small Buddha figures are carved in nine places, at the top as well as on the left and right sides. All of the nine Buddhas assume a different mudra. The pedestal on which the mandorla is mounted is octagonal and consists of three sections. The bottom section has downward-facing lotus petals on each of its eight sides with smaller flowers added to all eight corners. The middle section features bas-reliefs of guardian gods believed to protect Buddha and thwart evil spirits. The top section is decorated with full-blossomed lotus flowers in a semilunar shape, and small floral motifs are placed inside each petal for a lavishly ornate appearance. Similar in style to Buddha pedestal and mandorla from the 9th century and onward, this set is estimated to have been made sometime in late Unified Silla.
